While the plot has shades of The Godfather , it is deeply rooted in the specific caste dynamics and geography of Southern Tamil Nadu. The film tells the story of Velu (played by Kamal Haasan), a struggling writer who returns to his village after a long time. He's on a mission to find a successor to carry forward his family's legacy. Velu's journey becomes complicated when he's drawn into a local gang war between two factions, led by Muthusamy (played by R. N. Jayagopal) and Kumarasamy (played by Goundamani).
