iMovie may incorrectly claim media is still importing from an SD card. A known workaround is to Select All (Cmd+A) Cut (Cmd+X) , delete the impacted media from the event, and then re-import the file before pasting your timeline back. Safe Mode: If export fails entirely, booting in Safe Mode
