Romania had previously operated small, experimental DVB-T broadcasts in a couple of cities. September 2016

has fully completed its transition to the digital terrestrial television standard, officially discontinuing the older DVB-T standard in February 2025 . This move ensures that all terrestrial broadcasts in the country now use the more efficient H.264/MPEG-4 or HEVC compression formats to provide higher-quality video and improved capacity.
